Fire!

Bloody hell...

Was intending for this to be a lazy day, but t'was not to be. Woke up, got changed, had breakfast, sat at the computer to see smoke roiling around outside the window. A quick shout to the parents and we were out, running to the brook. And shit..

Some dicks had set fire to the grass of the brook. By the time we got there, a crowd of our neighbours had already gathered. We found out that 3 people had called the fire brigade already, so we watched helplessly as the fire took hold of the sun-dry grass, spreading like wildfire. By the time the fire engine came, most of the grass had be burnt. Our once-beautiful brook was now stained by an ugly patch of burnt turf.

Fucking assholes.

Book Review time; All Star Superman 1-2

All Star Superman

(Issues 1-2)

Now first off, I know that this isn't a book; it's a comic. But what the hell. It's still reading. I recently aquired the first two All-Star Superman comics, and in the recent light of my Dune review, I thought i'd do one for this.

You'd have to be living in a cave not to have heard of Superman. The Man of Steel. The iconic superhero; the first and most classic of them all. A product of DC, Superman has inspired millions of people. All Star Superman epitomizes this perfectly. It is a definitive take of the Superman mythos, and is a special break from the colossal scale of the DC multiverse; it is a collection of stories that just show you who Superman really is.

Each issue is relativly self-contained, but they all link up to a storyline throughout. They take you through humerous sections; Clark Kent trying to save Lex Luthor from a prison riots, to having Lois Lane gaining superpowers for a day, with comedic results with cameos from both Atlas and Samson. The comics do not write off the DC multiverse - instances where Batman is mentioned are enjoyable. My personal favourite line;

"Speaking of which, how is he?"
"Batman?
Great.
You know Batman."

The comics are not without thier classic superhero moments; from fighting chronological nightmares with the help of future Supermen, to fighting a Tyrant Sun, to battling the classic Lex Luthor, this comic will not let you down. A fantastic read.

Dune

a novel by Frank Herbert

Dune has commonly gained praise from critics, being regularly called "the greatest science fiction novels of all time", and "The Lord of the Rings' equal in the sci-fi genre".The praise is not given wrongly. Winner of both the Hugo and Nebula awards, it has proven to be one of the greatest books of the 20th century, if not of all time.

The novel takes place on the fictional world of Arrakis, commonly known as Dune. Noble houses plot and sabotage each other to gain power and wealth; wealth that is controlled soley on the most precious commodity in the universe - the spice, melange, that gives the user long-life and boosted mental aptitude.
Arrakis is a harsh, hostile world which is an inverted mirror to the rest of the universe; water is the most valuble thing, and spice is abundant. Great deserts encompass the land, made inhospitable by the colossal sandworms.
The novel is based on the young Paul Atriedes, the heir to the Atriedes House. However, thier rival house, Harkonnen sets up an elaborate plot to destroy the Atriedes once and for all; only with the help of the mysterious Fremen and the enigmatic Judge of the Change, can Paul survive to reclaim his rightful place and end the bloody fued once and for all.

Dune is simply one of the best books I have read. It is very hard to find any criticism in the rich, mysterious universe, where plots and inter-scheming happen at every turn. The only criticism I could find is that the end is a bit boring, due to Paul's near-omnipotence makes the end duel feel shallow. So with that done, I feel inclined to give it a rightful five stars for its magnificent story.

Seriously, I just have the happiest feeling. I had actually a GREAT day!

On the subject of birthdays

Namely, my birthday.

One month from now, I shall be 16 years of age. The big 1-6. Rah. According to this nifty book they gave us I will be able to:

- Have sex legally
- Drink beer and wine with a meal
- Buy lottery tickets, scratch cards and Premium Bonds.
- Become a street-trader (??)
- Drive a moped, mobility scooters and some tractors
- Fly solo in a glider

Yay?

Ugh. I have NO clue what to do for it. Its the day after the end of the +16 induction, the day when we're *technically* completly free for the summer. Summer, the big blue sky, the heat, the sun.

This fills me with dread.

I feel that I need to have an expectation to have a huge piss-up, s0mething big and fancy and exciting. Especially it being the start of summer. Gah. Then there'd be the really awkward situation of who to invite; as you can tell from my previous posts.

I'm boned. Wtb social life, pst.
