dear god an update?!

Le gasp! I haven't updated in like a month, but just shows you how boring my life is. I'm pretty much the same guy I was a month ago, so there you are.

Also, I want my Spaced dvd's to arrive :/

And I made this!

Monday 2 November 2009

"What does that make us?" "Big damn heroes, sir!"

The future.

My thoughts on what the future would hold. As in, when i'm grown up, what advances would the world have made technologically? What fantastic new things would be there?

I'd like to hope that we engage and grow as a species. That we manage to transcend the atmosphere and explore the universe. Yes, I'd love to be an astronaut; but I know it's not going to happen. I'm not nearly clever/fit/rich enough for that to happen. But to be part of constructing something like that, assisting in flight? Dream come true.

As you can tell, i'm enthusiastic about space. The idea attracts me so much; the endless depths, the uncharted territory of the universe. We could find millions of different species, minerals, sights. Ever since I was small, I loved adventure. Loved the sense of exploring a new place, loved the thrill of seeing new sights. Utterly great.

New planets also intruige me. I'd love to get a comet/planet named after me, to stay there for eternity. My life goal, that'll never ever be accomplished? First Man on Titan (largest Moon of Jupiter). I can always dream :)

Different types of propulsion also interest me; replacing inefficient combustion engines in cars and shuttles nowadays with more simple ideas - creating a small vaccum to propel it? Possibly. Pioneering companies also try and tackle this in innovitive new ways - Honda, Volkswagon and Microsoft all work towards this goal.

Ah well. Enough rambling. I've got a cracking idea for an article that just occured to me, so I might go and write a bit of that up ;). Will probably involve a lot of questioning, could be interesting. So if you're reading this chances are i'll ask you :).

Toodles for now!

Review time: Scribblenauts!

Ahoy hoy! I've not been around on here for a while, so I thought i'd might as well add a new arrow to my quiver, metaphorically speaking: a new review!

Scribblenauts

Scribblenauts is a game for the Nintendo DS, and gives a simple yet challenging premise: "Write Anything. Solve Everything" This is broadly true.

The game's main attraction is it's ability to summon up any kind of object you can think of so long as it's not Trademarked, a person's Name or a specific Place Name. And that's it. Go nuts.

Example: You're in an aquatic zone. To swim underwater, you can summon up a scuba diving tank, or you can summon up a submarine, or you can summon up a bubble of air. Enemies trying to kill you? Poof; summon up God to kick thier asses. Then, equip God with a Top hat and chainsaw to fight against a Kraken. It goes on and on.

There is a proper adventure mode, as in a series of challenges that test your skill, style and speed in trying to get the Starite. To quote Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw, "It is ALWAYS Stars". For example, you want to get the star down from the tree. How could you do that? There are numerous ways of achieving the goal!
1) Summon an axe and chop the tree down
2) Summon a lumberjack to chop it down
3) Summon a ball to throw at it to knock it down
4) Summon up a beaver to gnaw down the tree
5) Summon a ladder to climb up and get it
6) Summon a jetpack to fly onto it
7) Summon a policeman and throw a doughnut up thier, and watch him scramble up to get them
8) Summon a time machine, go back to the past, ride a dinosaur, go back to the present, knock over the tree with your dinosaur

And so on and so forth. Despite the lack of trademarked things, you still have a huge array of things to summon (22,000 words iirc). So unfortunatley, no summoning Lightsabers or Davy Jones.A complaint I do have, though, is that you cannot summon up any sorts of alcohol. They let you play with rifles, bombs, napalm, nukes, swords, but draw the line at alcohol? Fairly random.

Anyhoo, a good play nonetheless. 8/10, I'd say.
Any ideas for a next review people? Can be a book, a game, a film, a TV series etc etc. Ta!

Just a quick update

Ahoy to all you folks! Just a little update :)

First up, I'm going to be contributing towards this new-fangled "School magazine" that would be set up online. The meeting we went to was rather good, lots of year 10/11s, only a couple of +16 but they loooked like a good bunch. I'm going to help contribute to a comic, and i'm going to start writing book reviews. Should be teh funz0rz! Also, i've volunteered to be one of a cylce of "Editor-in-chief". Why, you ask? On a CV; "Former Editor-In-Chief". Bad. Ass.

(p.s if you want to contribute an article or w/e annoynmously or named, just message me in some way, and it should be able to get in)

Also, I have a Facebook fanclub of sorts! Kinda crazy, because a friend of mine made it and now it has ~60 people :O :O. Makes me feel warm n fuzzy inside :)
Am loling at other people who have taken the idea for that and tried to make thier own, (including PRESTON (in-joke)).

Watched Derren Brown yesterday. Lol'd fairly much as he failed. Then I realised it -was- a setup. Someone on WikiAnswers had this to say about it;

"This was definately faked (not that I expected it to be real). It's not a secret that you can work out roughly where the ball will land at roulette if you have the right machinery as it said at the beginning or if you are insane at methematics.

It was clearly a set up because you can't just go into a bank and take out £5000 at once without prior permission. I also think it would be illegal for Derren Brown to do so. He probably took nothing out and then Derren Brown made it look like he did. He is an illusionist after all.

I also think the casino was a set up as he has a ban from entering casons and he wasn't in disguise. He was also talking into his sleeve which any guards would spot instantly.

He failed on purpose as getting it right next to the number he thought it was going to be makes it look like the theory pretty much does work but he wouldn't have to give that guy £175000 persoanlly or from the production team (which he would if the casino was fake and he won)

Derren Brown is entertaining but he freely admits everything is a trick and I think in these cases the trick has been on anyone from the audience that believes that what he did was real.
"

Anyhoo, ta-ra for now!

Batman!

Well hello there! I haven't blogged in a while, and am thinking about turning this into more of a review/sort of thing, rather then grumblings about my average life.

First up;

BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM

Right, well I have finally got Batman: Arkham Asylum for the PC. After jumping through various hoops such as the f!cking Games for Windows Live crap, I got it to work.

First impressions?

Fucking. Awesome.

Due to the crappiness of my PC's graphics card, I could only play it in less-than-stellar performance, but it didn't matter. The combat is frankly amazing, but can get rather trivial or complex when many things are happening at once. It devolves into a clicking fest quickly but timing moves correctly can be outstanding. The layout of the place is rather well-rendered, and the atmosphere is great. The storyline, although nothing spectacularly groundbreaking, is to be praised for its execution of the "Batman vs EVERYONE" mythos.

Gadgets and tricks are top-notch too. Batarangs, Batclaws, Explosive Gels all come into play with great effect.

In-game cinematics were not so great, what with my graphics, but out-of-play cinematics were brilliant.
Level design; rather good, although I have seen a number of the arbitrary levels; the stealth level, the sewer level, the jumping-around level, etc. Oh well.

I've only encountered three boss fights at the moment. The first not-so-boss-like mutated joker goon was a simple matter of jumping out of the way. The next, Scarecrow, was absolutley fantastic. Seriously, that level was absolutley extraordinary. Let's just say you use the Bat-Signal in a more...potent way then usual :P.
Bane was nothing special, although it did piss me off what with slow reaction times through the game.

Also, a Batcave is used (of course) but it isn't as fancy as the ones in the movies. Oh well.

Last note; is it wrong that I felt more angry with goons trying to trash the Batmobile then I did when doctors were being kidnapped?

Bottom Line; It's awesome.

There we go. Toodle-oo for now, am having to pack mule stuff to Uni tommorow. Yay?

District 9!

Well, this week has been a good one.

+16 Started, and it's turning out to be a blast. I've got fairly good teachers in all my lessons, EXCEPTION being my Physics teacher, who is freaking AWESOME. Seriously, he's like me grown up. How cool is that?

Anyway!

I went to see District 9 today. I had been wanting to see it for a while now, so it was the culmination of a lot of anticipation. I think I was the most exicted to be there at the time :P

On the film itself, it is truly, specatcularly, awesome.

I might be raving about it, but it really was great, and very much appeased my sense in films. There were emotional bits, mega-gory bits, bits that were hilariously ironic, all of it.

Oh yeah...

And a HUGE. FUCKING. MECHA.

Seriously, to quote one of my respected movie critics, "it did aliens better the Star Trek, gunfights better then G.I. Joe, robots better then Transformers and special effects better then Terminator: Salvation" - MovieBob.

This film was great. The aliens were taken with a bit of Cthulu-esque imagining; i admired the intuitive, if arbitrary way that the humans couldn't use the aliens guns.

And the alien guns were pretty fucking awesome too.

And they left a fairly blatant open-ended story ready for a sequel? District 10? Hells yes!

"Ipsa scientia potestas est" - Knowledge itself is power...

Well, i'm gonna just steal greenpanda666's idea of a summer round up too.

This summer has been a fairly good one. I have gone out furlongs more than I usually did, and achieved a fair bit. The quick rundown;

- I have managed to get some nice new clothes for the upcoming school year, involving many trips to town, which have been fun.

- I've been to various people's houses and actually gone out and done stuff for once!

- I managed to get a fairly good set of results, although I didn't do that big a thing that I would have liked.

-I managed to make a fair few thing in my garage using odds and ends that i'm fairly proud of (see pressure pad)

- Health-wise, i'm not bang up to fitness as I wanted. My plans of doing excercise was sidetracked a few times, so I still have a gut.

- I managed to read a fair number of useful classics, such as Catch-22, Neuromancer and Y: The Last Man.

- I've managed to distinguish different alcohol, and have tried vodka and moonshine whiskey. (Tastes like shite)

- I have attempted to restard Keyboard playing. It's a start, although I would love to try out a saxophone.

- My main failure this summer is that I haven't been able to get a job. Ideally, i'd like to work where there's lots of books, such as the local library or Borders. But we'll see, I suppose.

I'm still worrying a bit about the subject's i've chosen for AS. I took Physics, Maths, Computing and History, but i'm worried that instead of taking Sciencey subjects I should have picked Artsy subjects; I would have changed for English Lit, Philosophy, History and something else.

Meh.

Bit scared now, since I wish I was good at Chemistry. Lots of things I could have done with that.
A list of interesting jobs I would have liked doing;
- Physicist, of the normal sort

- Astrophysicist, or something to do with space travel (like ground control, building it etc). I'm no Astronaut though.

- Meteorologist. Looking at a book I was given with various jobs, Meteorology fits in well with my subject choices. (Meteorology=Weather forecasting)

- Communications; filming movies/TV shows, etc.

- Editor/Publisher; Something to do with books would be mighty useful.

- Pyrotechnician. I would have loved to do this, but unfortunatly it requires high levels of Chemistry (Pyrotechnics are the fire displays in movies, gigs, etc, so the explosion guy xD)

- Programmer; Working on physics engines for games?

- Inventor; this is an outlandish and unpractical one, but hell its interesting.

- Pilot; very difficult with glasses.

Anyhoo.

I had a haircut. It's short. My stupidly long hair is gone.

School tommorow! Let's hope that I can keep organised this time, eh?

Huzzah!

Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Great day, all things considered. Results!

2 C's: D&T (which was a given, because my teacher hates me), and French (which I suck at)
1 B: Physics (although i'm looking into that, seems to be an outlier there)
7 A's: R.E. , English, English Lit, Maths, Chemistry, Biology, ICT
1 A*: History!

Yippee dippee doo!
Doing nothing today, but my weekend seems like it'll be filling up hopefully. Should be going to a short shindig tommorow, a possible rave on saturday and a family meal on sunday.

"If", by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too:

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;

If you can think—and not make thought your aim,

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two imposters just the same:

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings:

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss:

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with kings—nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much:

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,

Yours is the earth and everything that’s in it,

And—which is more—you’ll be a man, my son!

Thoughts? Opinions?

New post?!?!

Yeah. Started watching Firefly, as I recently aquired it for a very good price. Only watched the first couple of episodes so far, but OMG so awesome. It's like a Western set in space. Smuggling, heroics, Nathan Fillion punching someone in the face, it's all there. Truly awesome TV.

Hum. Other news. I have been out and about recently, wich is a plus for me! Good times.

I also recently downloaded Batman Arkham Asylum demo. It's a game (you guessed it) about Batman essentially in a prison with all the supervillains and inmates going loose. Great demo, cannot wait for the game.

Soo, that's all for now. Ho hum.

The sum of my boredness

Ahoy-hoy. Haven't been updating recently, due to some reasons that it's been rather boring. Went into an emo mode for a few days, but today I re-awoke the inventor in me.

Behold! Using nothing but Mcgyver-like tools, I created my own pressure pad. As you could guess, its a very simple process. You push down on it, it creates a circuit that emits a buzzer. Kept my sanity, though. I filed it under "physics-related mayhem".

It works too! I hid it under the doormat and nearly gave my brother a heart attack. Good stuff.

Onto other things. I recently read Catch-22, a good book. I might review it. Neuromancer and Paradise Lost should be arriving soon. Mebbe get a job as an editor? Not half a bad idea.

Might make a tripwire today. Shouldn't be too difficult.
Also need a job. Humbug. Am checking with Blaby Library, if I can get a job there that'd be ace. Working among books? Hells yes.

Could do with some new hoodies actually. Will need to head into town one day to sort that out.
That's all for now. We shall see what happens.

Mythos

Ahoyhoy, i'm back in the game it seems. Just finished writing up the *sizeable* chunk of the next installment to Agressive Expansion. #3 is up right now, if you want to take a gander.

At this point in time, it *is* my summer. Birthday shennanigans were rather mild this year, compared to other years. Need stuff to fill my time with. Hurm.
A curious note of mine; this year, I only recieved a few gifts as presents. It's a little sad, because when you were younger you'd ask for junk that you wouldn't remember. Now, since your older, you're wiser about investments. Just a thought.

As said before, I need a job. Up 'till now, i've always thought i'd get a job at my local library that's close by. I visit it regularly (it's good, so lynch me) and i'm hoping there's an opening. We'll see.

Brother's vamoosed off to spain for a week. Lucky sod.

A side note; I've been re-reading American Gods, and you'd be surprised at how many religious/deity references there are in it. It focuses not only on the famous Greek Parthenon, it takes elements from Norse and Egyptian too. It takes various religious concepts into it as well, even referring in one of the funnier statemements:

"So yeah, Jesus does pretty good over here. But I met a guy who said he saw him hitchhiking by the side of the road in Afghanistan and nobody was stopping to give him a ride. You know? It all depends on where you are."

Quite funny, I thought.

Anyhoo, there's more mindless twaddle. Ta-ra for now.

Quote of the Moment- The quickest way is sometimes the longest.

Not blogged for nearly a week now; haven't had much to say, really. I now have a funky-looking cut on my wrist (NOT EMO SLITTING IT GOT COUGHT ON A BED) and i'm just keeping the wheels going.

Presentation evening tonight. Should be alright. Prom on thursday. Still don't know about transport there & back.

So I leave you with this:

Fire!

Bloody hell...

Was intending for this to be a lazy day, but t'was not to be. Woke up, got changed, had breakfast, sat at the computer to see smoke roiling around outside the window. A quick shout to the parents and we were out, running to the brook. And shit..

Some dicks had set fire to the grass of the brook. By the time we got there, a crowd of our neighbours had already gathered. We found out that 3 people had called the fire brigade already, so we watched helplessly as the fire took hold of the sun-dry grass, spreading like wildfire. By the time the fire engine came, most of the grass had be burnt. Our once-beautiful brook was now stained by an ugly patch of burnt turf.

Fucking assholes.

Book Review time; All Star Superman 1-2

Cryptex reviews...

All Star Superman

(Issues 1-2)

Now first off, I know that this isn't a book; it's a comic. But what the hell. It's still reading. I recently aquired the first two All-Star Superman comics, and in the recent light of my Dune review, I thought i'd do one for this.

You'd have to be living in a cave not to have heard of Superman. The Man of Steel. The iconic superhero; the first and most classic of them all. A product of DC, Superman has inspired millions of people. All Star Superman epitomizes this perfectly. It is a definitive take of the Superman mythos, and is a special break from the colossal scale of the DC multiverse; it is a collection of stories that just show you who Superman really is.

Each issue is relativly self-contained, but they all link up to a storyline throughout. They take you through humerous sections; Clark Kent trying to save Lex Luthor from a prison riots, to having Lois Lane gaining superpowers for a day, with comedic results with cameos from both Atlas and Samson. The comics do not write off the DC multiverse - instances where Batman is mentioned are enjoyable. My personal favourite line;

"Speaking of which, how is he?"
"Batman?
Great.
You know Batman."

The comics are not without thier classic superhero moments; from fighting chronological nightmares with the help of future Supermen, to fighting a Tyrant Sun, to battling the classic Lex Luthor, this comic will not let you down. A fantastic read.

Book review time; Dune

Cryptex reviews....

Dune

a novel by Frank Herbert

Dune has commonly gained praise from critics, being regularly called "the greatest science fiction novels of all time", and "The Lord of the Rings' equal in the sci-fi genre".The praise is not given wrongly. Winner of both the Hugo and Nebula awards, it has proven to be one of the greatest books of the 20th century, if not of all time.

The novel takes place on the fictional world of Arrakis, commonly known as Dune. Noble houses plot and sabotage each other to gain power and wealth; wealth that is controlled soley on the most precious commodity in the universe - the spice, melange, that gives the user long-life and boosted mental aptitude.
Arrakis is a harsh, hostile world which is an inverted mirror to the rest of the universe; water is the most valuble thing, and spice is abundant. Great deserts encompass the land, made inhospitable by the colossal sandworms.
The novel is based on the young Paul Atriedes, the heir to the Atriedes House. However, thier rival house, Harkonnen sets up an elaborate plot to destroy the Atriedes once and for all; only with the help of the mysterious Fremen and the enigmatic Judge of the Change, can Paul survive to reclaim his rightful place and end the bloody fued once and for all.

Dune is simply one of the best books I have read. It is very hard to find any criticism in the rich, mysterious universe, where plots and inter-scheming happen at every turn. The only criticism I could find is that the end is a bit boring, due to Paul's near-omnipotence makes the end duel feel shallow. So with that done, I feel inclined to give it a rightful five stars for its magnificent story.

I'm happy!

Seriously, I just have the happiest feeling. I had actually a GREAT day!

-Morning; we were making great music on the bus, was ace fun

On the subject of birthdays

Namely, my birthday.

One month from now, I shall be 16 years of age. The big 1-6. Rah. According to this nifty book they gave us I will be able to:

- Have sex legally
- Drink beer and wine with a meal
- Buy lottery tickets, scratch cards and Premium Bonds.
- Become a street-trader (??)
- Drive a moped, mobility scooters and some tractors
- Fly solo in a glider

Yay?

Ugh. I have NO clue what to do for it. Its the day after the end of the +16 induction, the day when we're *technically* completly free for the summer. Summer, the big blue sky, the heat, the sun.

This fills me with dread.

I feel that I need to have an expectation to have a huge piss-up, s0mething big and fancy and exciting. Especially it being the start of summer. Gah. Then there'd be the really awkward situation of who to invite; as you can tell from my previous posts.

I'm boned. Wtb social life, pst.

Thursday 28 May 2009

Catchup

Strikes me that I haven't posted here in a while; nothing much to report, except that revision is taking quite some time. Things won't stick.

Luckily, today was spent devoted to Physics. Physics, one of my favourite and *best* subjects; it strikes me as being a firm choice of job? But I digress.

Maths, Physics, Computing. A strong trio of subjects that will hopefully propel me to work that I will enjoy. Ideal jobs?
- Physics game engine developer?
- Working in NASA or something; rocket science, astronomy?
- Programming/software creation?

Let's hope things go my way.

Beards

Hurm. I'm needing to shave a lot more, as the stubble is growing a lot faster. And you can't go wrong with a picture of Lincoln.

I'm toying with the idea of growing out a beard, like over summer. As some people said, if you cut regularly, it'll just grow back faster. Idea?

I might grow it out into either a full-on beard, which might look a bit off, or I could just go for the evil genius goatee. That would be hilarious as fuck. But yeah, beard-growing during summer? Perhaps, perhaps. I don't know if my baby-face is up for it ;)

So I ask you bloggers, yay or nay to a beard?

Tuesday 19 May 2009

Hurm.

'Cause I'm Slim Shady, yes I'm the real Shady
All you other Slim Shadys are just imitating
So won't the real Slim Shady please stand up,
please stand up, please stand up?

Addicted to that song. Anyway, finished exams 'till June. Fab. I need to go out more though. I want to see Star Trek!

The end of all things

That's it; end of compulsory education. Pic unrelated, it's just badass.

It has been a good run. The two years there have had thier ups and downs, their goods and bads. But they were great.
I still can't believe that i'm not going in on Monday for lessons.

There are lessons that i'll miss, and some not so much;

- ICT; had a great group of friends, was irritating at times with c/w but we persevered by helping each other out. I'm taking Computing, so it'll be similar.

- French; To be fair, I won't miss it. I can't stand it. I sat next to an irritating chav for most of it- the first year, though, was fun; great group. Pity new teacher moved us all around.

- D&T; I'll miss some of the group. I won't miss the teacher, whom we call "Mr Douchebag", constantly destroying my work.

- English; I'll miss this, alot. I had a great class, and we had some fantastic times together. We ended very fittingly though, I thought. If I had another slot next year, I would have chose an English.

- Sciences; I shall miss my science class. By the end, we all knew each other pretty well, and I met some great people there. Also, I shall miss very much Mr T. He was great; he's leaving though! However, I am taking Physics next year, so it's all good.

- R.E. ; This I will miss very much so. It was, essential, a doss lesson with an awesome teacher. He was just like me and my mates thier, and our writing adventures were truly epic.

- Maths; The class was fantastic. 'nuff said. I'm taking it next year.

- History; I'm taking it next year- it was boring at times though.

I'll miss it all.
S, O, R. Keep in touch.

Tuesday 12 May 2009

On the topic of...

Heroes.

I'm not gonna talk about exams, because there's other people for that. French speaking went crap; I forgot everything. R.E. made my wrist hurt. Ugh.

Onto brighter subjects! Yesterday was the season finale for Heroes, end of Fugitives.
WARNING; SPOILERS IMMINENT
Well, what can I say? It was a decent pair of episodes, i'm glad they showed them back-to-back. I admire Sylar's ability of framing Danko, but the best bit came near the end. After some sort of bondage/slave scene with Sylar coming onto Claire, we get to the best trash talk the series had to offer;
"I'll take him low, you take him high. Let's cut this son of a bitch in half"
I mean, seriously, how cool is that? Nathan and Peter arrive at the door, to see Claire being thrown out. They fly in to Sylar wielding blue lightning.
Waiting for the fight scene.
See flashes of blue coming out of the closed door. See Claire peering through the door crack.
Waiting for the fight scene.
Hear huge explosions/lightning strikes.
Waiting for the fight scene.
Commotion stops. Claire walks in to rubble/fire.

WHERES MY GODDAMN FIGHT SCENE?!

I mean that was the best bit of the series, having Peter and Nathan, flying, taking on a lightning-wielding Sylar! All pewpew lazers and SFX! Gah!

Then we have some sort of ending; i'm not sure how to approach it. In short, Sylar kills Nathan. Pete tranquillizes Sylar by using a very clever gambit. Matt memory-overrides Sylar, apparently getting rid of his memories and infuses Nathan's memories in there. Then the shape-changing makes him into Nathan.

WHAT THE HELL

They just killed off Sylar! You can't do that kind of head fuckery without a bunch of consequences! My bets are just Nathan getting some kind of Schizo going with Sylar. But no more Zachary Quinto! Nooooooooo! He was like the most badass of them all!

Also, naked water-woman apparently drown-kills some agent. Bets on her being the 3rd sister.

All in all, it was a kinda dissapointing ending. They missed out the epic fight scene (which they have a habit of doing; hello series one ending?) and they did some kind of mind fuckery that i'm sure accounts for necromancy. If it wasn't for that trash talk, it would have been crap.

Story will come after exams.

Small announcement

I have a new blog, at http://carefreechaos.blogspot.com/ which will be my place where I shall practice some writing.

I'm thinking something sci-fi/steampunk?

Idols

One wonders what things made him the boy he is today. Who he looks up to. This will clear up any doubt, I hope.

There have been many Idols/Role Models for me growing up. There still is. A few of them are listed below;

- Sir Terry Pratchett. A veritable genius of humour, wit and creativity. His Discworld books had a significant positive impact on me, and they still do. A truly fantastic man.

- Hans Zimmer. If I had devoted more time to being musical, I would have aspired to be like the man. (For ignorant people, Hans Zimmer is the composer to many, MANY film soundtracks; the Batman films, Pirates of the Carribbean, Gladiator...)

- A plethora of actors. Patrick Steward, Ian Mckellen, Christopher Lee, Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Mike Myers, Harrison Ford, Leonard Nimoy, Zachary Quinto, Seth Green, Zach Braff, Will Smith. All fantastic. If I was to be a drama-guy, I would have followed thier lead.

- Serj Tankian. Not only for his work with System of a Down, not only for his solo work, but the work he does with the Axis of Justice.

- Neil Gaiman, for the same reasons as Terry Pratchett.

- Randall Munroe. For his work on xkcd, and the work for physics.

- My family. For being there when I need them.

- My friends. For giving me the ability to tolerate the days.

Human nature..

We all want to believe that what we do is very important.
That people hang onto our every word.
That they care what we think.
The truth is, you should consider yourself lucky if even occasionally you make anyone feel a little better.
After that, it's all about the people you let into your life.

Endings

I am not a sentimental person...but I have my niches.

I enjoy nostalgia. I like memories.

I can't stand endings. Most of the time, I break down and cry for a bit. Call me weak, it's what I do. Endings..they are, in a word, the End. Finished. Done for. I hate the fact that despite the fact the thing has finished...life goes on. You've got to keep going. Life doesn't stop. Life keeps on rolling.

This post is brought on by me watching the series finale of Scrubs. It has long since been one of my favourite T.V. shows; I can identify with all of the characters - J.D. , Turk, Dr Cox, Elliot, Carla, Dr Kelso, Janitor...
I can't believe it's over. The finale...was apt. Truly, it was a brilliant show.
Other endings; things that might seem trivial to others, such as quitting World of Warcraft. It was for the better, but I don't regret a single minuite I spent there. I wasn't upset at the end of the game, but the companions I had made.

And now we come back to real life. I don't know if I'll be able to cope with the end of term here; seeing people that won't ever come back into my life. Sure, new people will come, perhaps for the better. But the memories...memories will always stay with me.
Probably the most distressing will be my oldest, most loyal friend is leaving. I've known him since pre-school, and we've stood by each other for many, many years. He's gonna leave. And he SUCKS at msn...

It should be silly of me to be upset at this; the main tearup will be end of Sixth Form..everyone going thier seperate ways. That'll break me.

I hate endings. So much.
If only life was simpler...go to school like this for ever..no stress of exams..just the ability to learn and socialise in a great environment. I belonged, in school. The outside world...it scares me. I'm not one to walk the road like I own it..I slink alongside, pretending to blend in.

I wish everyone could stay as they were; happy.

Wednesday 6 May 2009

Hitting the fan, it is.

In the short space of an afternoon everything seems to have gone to fuck; shit hitting the fan, so to speak.

I'm not asking for what happens- i'm asking for people to keep calm, as much as possible.

Somehow a cheerful post which I intended here seems...inappropriate. It will come later.

Tuesday 5 May 2009

Hurm.

In a sense, my foreboding was right. Barfed as soon as I got home. Bad times.

Bleh. Regardless, I still don't feel good.

Monday 4 May 2009

Foreboding

I've just had the most terrible sense of foreboding. Hurm.

Personalities, and relations to games?

Anyone who has played an RTS; hell, any strategy game will know of the three principal ways of playing them- note this list is flexible, and can be altered as much as possible.

The Rusher - Focuses all energy/resources at the very start to try to overwhelm the enemy before they can react.

The Turtler - Focuses all energy/resources at the very start to erect defenses fast and to protect itself from enemies.

The Boomer - Focuses all energy/resources on trying to gain more and more resources, ignoring military ventures until endgame.

As can be inferred from this list, the Rush can defeat the Boom, the Boom can defeat the Turtle, the Turtle can defeat the Rush.

So how can this transfer into real life? Again, this is just generally stereotyping for me here, but we'll see how this goes.
Imagine the Rusher as a child in primary school. He focuses all his energy being social with other children, and as a result becomes popular early on. But, like most rushers, he becomes a jerk.
Let's personify the Turtle as a child too, but as a child who constantly builds walls around himself and makes sure he is protected from any problem, be this through personal strength or through close-knit groups.
Then we have the Boom. The weakest at the start, he focuses all energy on academics and skills for later life, neglecting social relationships, at most having one or two friends.
If we apply the same rules, the Rusher can easily overwhelm the Boomer, via bullying. The Turtle can defeat the Rush, as if he tries to make him a target the Turtle will overcome his assaults and will become known as a guy not to mess with. Then we have the Boomer overcoming the Turtle. Before we explain that scenario, let's look at the children as they progress.

The Rusher, having used all its energy early on, neglected its resources and so is left weak at endgame, without any proper resource base and a military that is trivial compared to others.
The Turtler is similar in that it does not have that many resources but regardless still focuses on defence. This however can be broken, due to the Turtle's methods of defence being outdated and easily overcome.
The Boom triumphs at endgame, having a strong resource base which can make its military and defence stronger then both the Rusher and the Turtler. It has become wildly self-sufficient, and can be vengeful if early Rushes fail.
To be even more blatantly stereotypical, imagine the Rusher as chavs, Turtler as another group (e.g emos, goths) and the Boomer as nerds.

If you substitute resources for academics, military for social outgoing and defence for ways of stopping harm, you have a good analogy.
I'm very pleased with it.

The product of msn conversations

Young girls love jerks.
If you wanna pull; be a prick.

Being nice will get you NO-WHERE.

Hence my screwiness.

Religion; a reply post

Since greenpanda666 has thrown down the gauntlet about this iffy topic, I feel compelled to write a reply.
Also, it helps towards R.E revision ^^

Right. Just to start with, I am an Agnostic. In my opinion, it is the most logical choice to follow; not completly ruling out the possibilty of an omnipotent being, but carrying out my day-to-day life without such assistance.
The concept of an all-powerful God is an outdated thought. Back in the Stone Ages, we based our faith on the weather; God was the one who brought the rain, the lightning, the wind. Pushing forward to the modern era, science has advanced in leaps and bounds to show us the reasons for these phenomena. The Bible; nowadays shown to be full of hypocritical sayings. Thus, there is no need for a god like that at this age; correct? Maybe.

I feel obligied to reference a certain quote;

"God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it?" - Nietzsche

This itself brings with it a number of inferences. If we partially use the theory from "Small Gods", a god can only exist throw belief. Without the belief of the many, a god can die. Do people actually believe in the entity itself, or the people that stand for it (i.e. the Church). Did we, in a phrase, kill God through science? If so, could this bring consequences? Perhaps.

I'd also like to express anger at a number of things. Religion is the one thing that continually has invoked war and despair and suffering around the world. The Pope; the current one is a disgrace, frankly. He rejects the use of condoms claiming they spread AIDS, a fact that has been disproven time and time again. He is a blatant homophobe that condemns homosexuality; he does not deserve to be head of one of the most powerful organisations in the country.

In conclusion, the concept of religion is understandable. People need hope; I praise religions that give people that. But the fanaticism that comes with it; unacceptable.
That's all I got for now; enjoy!

The LIST Mk.1

I just realised. I don't have a LIST. Because everyone needs a LIST in thier lives. Y'know what I mean. It shall be my doom LIST, or just things I want to punch. Either's good.
So, without further ado;

Cryptex's LIST: Mk.1
1. Miley Cyrus.
2. Cats.
3. Die-hard theists that force thier religion down your throat.
4. Bikes.
5. Sheds.
6. Sod's Law.
7. Finishing a good book to find you have no more.
8. Poetry.

Swine Flu

OHEMGEE WE'RE GONNA DIE!!!!11!!

Anyway.

Swine Flu at this time of writing is level 5. That was done in 6 days. SIX FRIGGIN DAYS. It sounds serious. It could be potentially fatal.

Confirmed Cases: 212.

Deaths: 9

This may not be much, but it's spreading out across the world. The flu itself should be pretty easy to quarantine.

Fuck Mexico. Fuck bloody holidayers who went to Mexico.
Girl at my school has just returned from there.

I'm screwed.

I need precedence.
I'm going to read World War Z. This sounds awfully familiar.

Epitome of idiocy

"Hello, this is the internet helpline. We are not using this line any more, so please go to this website to find assistance; ------"

Sunday 26 April 2009

Hurm.

(Just so you guys know, the "Hurm" I usually say is taken from Watchmen; Rorsarch's version of "Hmm")

Not been updating much. Blame Valve. Been playing Team Fortress 2 recently, after giving it a go. After you find a decent server, it's one of the most balanced games i've played. And hilariously fun.

Exams are coming up. Ugh. Revision is paramount for this, and I just spent the better half of my Sunday learning French speaking.

Again; Ugh.

It sucks to finish a good book. The main problem being; you have to get another. I just finished Dune, and to be frank nothing can top that. I mulled over re-reading Ravenor, or the Sabriel series. I decided on Small Gods, by Terry Pratchett. It's good to read things about turtles.

Not much more to report; I just wish the exams would hurry up and be done with. This infernal waiting.

We have 3 more weeks until Exam Leave. Isn't that grand? Knowing me, it's going to be revision-based; but i'm gonna have fun.

I've also been toying with whether to go to the prom or not. If I do, it'd be pretty good to see everyone again, once more. However, there'd be the expectacny to ask a girl; which i'm terrible at. Hurm.

Chin up, I suppose.

Alter Egos

A topic I know much of, I shall hope to explore alter egos and alias', mainly through the use of the internet.

The need for privacy is acceptable, and encouraged. You wouldn't go onto a shady website and put all your personal details because you felt like it, would you? Filth hangs around those sites, and you would do well to avert them. Creating an alter ego, an avatar of yourself in cyberspace is an asset to some, but with negative downsides. A name is everything. Some people choose an alias name and stick by it throughout thier travels through the web. Some people change it, to cover thier tracks. It's all relative. To learn more about these kinds of internet identies, I would steer you to this website- CLICKY written by an old friend of mine.

This post didn't lead to where I hoped I was going to go, but i'll salvage what I can.

In real life, I am a 15-year-old boy, socially inept yet cheerful.
In games though, I become more then that. I become the hero, the leader. I have become Gordon Freeman, Anticitizen One, the One Free Man.

I become Geamo, the dwarven hunter, hero of Azeroth and slayer of many evils. Along with my pet Trex, Tycho, I have slain countless foes and saved numerous cities, aiding dragons, titans and murlocs.

I become Bane, Force Commander of the Blood Ravens chapter of the Adeptus Astartes. I serve the Emperor in slaying his foes such as the Tyranids, Eldar and Orks.

I become Geamo, the Vault Dweller of 101, making my way across the Capital Wasteland, slaying Super Mutants, Ghouls and Enclave forces to find my father; i'm assisted by the Brotherhood of Steel, Fawkes and my pet dog, Dogmeat.

These have been just a few of the avatars I have played in-game. I hope you enjoyed this blog.

Cryptex out.

Saturday 18 April 2009

Oh, sweet crowbar.

Ah, sweet crowbar, you mean so much to me.
Multitudes of boxes have been smashed to give up thier items to me; through you.
I have slain countless headcrabs and barnacles just because you were so damn useful.

Toor-alur-alai.

The shotgun, the shotgun, what times we've had together.
Father Grigori gave you to me, and what a present it was!
With the one-shot, I kill normal zombies; the double-shot for the fast, bastards.

Grav-gun, you are mine. From picking up flammable canisters to buzzsaws, we have obliterated combine, zombies and countless other foes.
From solving physics puzzles to blasting away hacks, we have prevailed.

And so it was. I am Anticitizen One.

Rationality

Rationality is a fickle thing. It comes at you when you dont want it, and is cheerfully ignored by others when you bring it up. Most the time, providing rational explanations will be accepted by the morons of society, which are ironically the majority. Some people won't see reason. To quote the iconic Alfred from The Dark Knight.

"some men won't be reasoned, bribed or bargained with. Some men just want to see the world burn"

People are strange. Fragile. You push them too far and it all comes tumbling down. Meh.

And once again today, I find myself the diplomat. The thin blue line between chaos and anarchy. I hopefully have defused a situation that could have led to violence. Let's hope.
Also, I can't be mean it seems. Psychological flaw.

Hoo-rah.

Nostalgia

Hum.

When the storm hits your front door, with a roar you can't ignore....
Ya run, run, away! but there's no place to hide, mate!
When the days turn into night, you don't got no chance to fight...
'Cause you're too late! so kiss your ass goodbye, mate!

Wednesday 8 April 2009

Ooooh controversy.

I have spent quite a lot of today seeing through the veil. I'll talk you through it.

Myspace notifies me of an update by Serj Tankian, a man who I highly respect due to his situation being quite similar to mine. I learn that 24th April is the national recognition day of the Armenian Genocide. Fury rises as I learn more. I read more about the "outsiders" of society, not willing to fall in line with the others.

Serj Tankian. Rage against the machine. Anti-Flag. These are but a few of people out there trying to do things.

There's a lot of shit out there. A LOT. My wanderings take me to the xkcd forums, where I read through quite a few of the threads, and marvel at the logic and the intellectual replies. These intruige me.

I refuse to be a statistic. I will make a difference. Call this a self-motivational. I will not be just a person falling in line with the rest. I will do what I can for people less fortunate then me, via direct aid or supporting others that would. I won't blindly follow orders.

I read about these Sudbery schools. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudbury_school) They sound...curious. And fantastic.

However, there is a flip side to these kinds of thinking. Surely, I can't be the only one. I must bet that nearly every child to emerge from these systems feels the same way. I am going to quote something;

"You must fancy yourself a rebel, who stands against all forms of authority, and thinks that the Government, corporations and the 'Man' are responsible for all the wrongs in the world which of course isn't very rebellious at all and is what every other 20-something moron in the world who thinks he has an original thought in the world believes."
- How to be Evil
Perhaps this is the case. I know i'm not getting the full picture. But allow my outrage now. I'm 15, I can still be a brat.

Edit; I'm not going to flail this post at other people. Let's see who actually cares for updates.

(B)Log entry #20

I think it's time for another blog. Was a good day.

Racked my brains for 30mins and couldn't come up with a meaningful blog topic. Sorry.

Instead, I will go off on an interesting subject, I think. Webcomics.

Webcomics are basically comic strips accessed by the internet that are usually free and updated regularly. These are fantastic additions to days I find, due to thier humour and wit. A few that I read;
http://xkcd.com/ - One of the first, best and funniest strips out there. With little to no contiuity, xkcd brings short bursts of wit that is funny, intelligent and often off-the-wall. Emphasis on stickmen makes you see the words more, with them bringing the main humor of the strip.

http://www.drmcninja.com/ - Dr Mcninja is another great strip. It is what it says on the tin; A doctor, who is also a ninja. Quite a good backstory, recently transferred to colour drawings. Look at it this way; in one of his adventures, he punches dracula and surfs robot dracula back to earth.

http://www.giantitp.com/index.html - The Order of the Stick. A bunch of adventurers get of classic role-playing genres end up on an extremly long quest. Recent adventures have gone a tad bit stale, but the old stuff is still great.

http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/ - Penny Arcade. One of the biggest webcomics up, gaming or otherwise. What makes this comic so great is not the comic itself. The creators have been so successful with this venture that they hold thier own game convention, and even greater they have thier own charity set up. Hats off to them.

http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php - Ctrl+Alt+Del. A great gaming-based comic, again, with a good backlog of comics. A good read.

http://www.questionablecontent.net/ - Questionable Content. A slice-of-life comic, mainly following the life of an indie-rocker with lots of good references. Fantastic read, but has a bit too much drama for my liking. Think of it like a soap but intellectual.

http://www.pvponline.com/ - PvP. Introduced to me through Flep, this is another great gaming-based comic, with a huge backlog of strips from 1998, with great parts of wit and humour. Drama involved.

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?viewmap=4&p=001786 - MS Paint Adventures. One of the wackiest and random comics I have read. EVER.

There you go. Just a few of the better webcomics I read. They just make waking up to a new day that bit more bearable :)

Now, i'm off to kill some n00bs on Dawn of War. Ta-ta!

Sunday 5 April 2009

Jumping on the Bandwagon

This blog will primarily be for replying to Flep's post, just to prove his impact.

On the note of that blood-pumping chest muscle, I haven't exactly been that lucky in the sense. Social interactions beyond school are now, if ever, melectiously planned out in advance due to the lack of them. It wasn't always like this though.

Back in secondary, I was part of a close-knit group of mates that were great. We hung out at school, we got similar grades so we were parts of the same class, in a sense we were a good gang. We didn't go and do property damage or that shit, we were the decent guys who regularly went to the cinema, round each other's houses and usually played a bit on the xbox/playstation/gamecube. It was fantastic.

Then, we get to college. The close-knit group of mates frays, mainly due to members splitering off (in one case completly without any explanation of why) and finding thier own groups of mates. However, in my case, there was a frickin' annoying rumor going around by the first year that I was of a certain religious orientation that did certain things to boy's genitals (Which i'm most definatly not). For this part, any group I attempted to join I was met with prejudice that was unjustified. This led to a friction between me and my former friends. I went into a period of time where I shunned social interactions and preffered to spend my time playing on my computer i.e. being a nerd.

Nevertheless my grades did not slip, and I was happy to know that it would get better. People in the groups were becoming less prejudiced and all was going well. Then, the impact. One of my former good friends started going out with this girl. They did all the boyfriend/girlfriend stuff and eventually, every member of my previous close-knit group of mates has had or has a girlfriend (in the case of one, 5). I am left without the feeling of knowing what it's like. In a way, I knew that this would happen; me being the last. There just hasn't seemed to be a girl that swings the same way as I do. Meh.

However, things are perking up. I've been assimilated into this new group of mates (who are awsome) and I still have ties into my old mates. One of my confidants that I tell things to is a girl, and we have a mutual agreement. It helps to talk. I think that i'm able to start trusting more; an assent, in my opinion. Social interactions still evade me, but it's getting better. It is.

One of my main helps through my downtime was my brother. The fact that he was like me, but now has a great set of mates, he's going to a top uni, he has a long-standing girlfriend and he's gone to play D&D just goes to show that everything will look up :)

Chin up!

P.S. A long post, but one of the more meaningful i've done I think. A review on American Gods will be up next, so keep tuned!

Things

Things that I need to do before I die:

Post a well-thought out blog at one in the morning; CHECK

I like pie.

Friday 3 April 2009

Hai!

Bah.

Another blog, it seems.

Um.

A horse walks into a bar and the barman says "Why the long face?" The horse says "My wife just died"

Um.

A man walks into a doctors. He says "Doctor, i'm really depressed. Life is getting me down. I'm feeling really really down." The doctor says "The great clown Plonkini is in town at the circus. Go watch the show, sure to cheer you up" The man says "But...I am Plonkini!"

Hurm.

I really should write a more detailed post.

But I really can't be arsed. There's nothing I can say that won't alienate people or make others upset. People ask, why are you in such a down mood all the time? The ones who know why are the ones who can't do anything about it. And that's the tragedy.

Thursday 2 April 2009

Its a blog?!

Golly gee its a blog? Hum. Something must be up.

So I was talking a lot today on one of my rant/stories. I like to do these alot, and it might lose the impact through writing but what the hey.

Starts off;
They don't make the packs of magic stars as big as they used to
They got rid of the people on them!
The orange one was the best
They all got rid of them
They live in Islington london now
They're all homosexuals now
Theyre one of the gangs in Islington
Islington is where all of the kiddie stuff goes when they get rid of them
Tellytubbies; 2 of them died to in-fighting, and theyre one of the main gangs in Islington
The only way to kill a tellytubby is to break the screen
The tweenies are all homosexuals now
The only way to kill a tweenie is a bullet through the brain
Kipper the dog had to be put down because he had rabies
Kipper the dog had been ressurected by Arthur the aardvark as a zombie
Clifford the big red dog and kipper duke it out in islington
Balamory was nuked
The balamory gang are all ghouls now
Rosie and Jim's canal boat sank in Islington
Rosie and Jim are now shark-people
Islington is now a battleground for all these

See? Lock me up now folks, it's going to be a long night...

Wednesday 1 April 2009

Elloor

Ello! It'sa me again, nearly Easter! Woo

Been getting a lot of coursework recently; suckish.
Got an interesting story to tell, though.

Alright, i'm on the late bus back (YAY DT DONE) and a pretty girl sits next to me; we never talk regularly with each other, just out of no reason I didn't want to question. I have a look and who would it be but my good friend who I used to go swimming lessons with when I was a wee lad. She's pretty nice, but no "hello", no "how are you", no "goodbye". Nothing. How people can change, eh.

Now i've got some ass flying off the handle at me for no reason because for some reason i'm now being told that I "insult" him, or "insult his friends". This was with no warning. And apparently, I "stabbed him in the back by turning all his friends against me". FFS.

That's how I roll. If you don't like it, you can gtfo.
